On Tuesday, Chelsea secured their spot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund at Stamford Bridge, progressing 2-1 on aggregate. Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz were on the scoresheet, with Havertz converting a twice-taken penalty.

This win was crucial for manager Graham Potter, whose job had been in jeopardy due to a disappointing season. Despite spending over £500 million ($600 million) on new signings in one season, the team had yet to see significant results.

Chelsea Entered The Quarter-finals Of The Champions League 2023

After a disappointing run of form that saw them win only three of their last 16 matches, Chelsea had slipped to 10th place in the Premier League and were eliminated early from both domestic cup competitions. However, in their Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund, some of their expensive star players stepped up and delivered a crucial win to keep their hopes of a third European Cup alive.

Manager Graham Potter expressed his delight at the team's victory, stating that there was a fantastic feeling in the dressing room and that the competition held significant importance for them after enduring a tough period.

Despite arriving in England on the back of a 10-game winning streak in all competitions, Dortmund failed to pose a significant attacking threat in the first half of their match against Chelsea, with the exception of a Marco Reus free-kick that was expertly saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Following their elimination from the Champions League, Dortmund manager Edin Terzic conceded that Chelsea deserved to progress to the quarter-finals, stating that both legs were closely contested and that moments and small margins can often be the deciding factors in games of this magnitude.

The Chelsea Players Performed Well In The Match

There were numerous missed opportunities at the other end of the pitch as well. Kai Havertz hit the inside of the post with a volley, and later scored a goal that was ruled out due to Raheem Sterling's offside position earlier in the move.

However, the worst miss of the night came when Kalidou Koulibaly miscued a shot with an open goal, and Joao Felix's follow-up attempt was blocked on the line. Despite the nail-biting finish, Chelsea manager Graham Potter was animated on the touchline, constantly urging the crowd to push his team forward.

After the match, Potter expressed his emotions, stating that the end was tense but that the boys played fantastically.

Chelsea's goal-scoring drought came to an end as Kai Havertz scored their third goal in eight games with a penalty early in the second half. However, the German international needed two spot-kicks to make his mark, with his first effort coming back off the post.

VAR intervened, however, as Dortmund were punished for encroaching, and Havertz coolly slotted the ball into the corner of the net with his second attempt.

Despite being ruled out of the running for Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham due to their spending spree, Chelsea secured their spot in the quarter-finals. Bellingham had a chance to take the tie to extra-time but missed from close range.
